A man was shot and killed in a deputy-involved shooting in unincorporated Westmont, four blocks from where a woman was shot dead, authorities said.

The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, died at the scene, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Trina Schrader, adding that no deputy was hurt and that the shooting is being investigated by sheriff’s homicide detectives.

The deputy-involved shooting occurred near the intersection of South Vermont Avenue and West 102nd Street around 1:30 a.m., Wednesday, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Diane Hecht.

A sheriff’s homicide captain told NBC4 the female victim was found near South Vermont and West 106th as deputies responded to a call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon.

The woman was shot by the suspect, the captain said. A short time later, the suspect fired at arriving deputies with a shotgun, and they returned fire.

The suspect’s body could be seen in an alley between South Vermont and South Budlong avenues, a  news videographer reported from the scene.
