A man who runs a restaurant in Santa Clarita has been arrested for allegedly forcing a cook to work without pay for 3 years and physically abusing him.

Pardeep Kumar, 47, of Newhall was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon at his eatery in the 2330 block of Valencia Boulevard. The arrest was based on an email the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department received from the alleged victim’s brother in Mumbai.

Kumar has been booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on suspicion of mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon, involuntarily servitude, and human trafficking.

His bail was set at $100,000.

The sheriff’s department says the victim was forced to work 12 to 14 hours a day seven days a week. He says that if he made a mistake Kumar beat him. He was forced to live at Kumar’s home and was not allowed to communicate with anyone in the outside world.
