Authorities Tuesday identified a San Francisco man who was killed on the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway west of the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway in the Irwindale area, when he got out of his car after a solo crash and was struck by a big rig.
The crash was reported about 1:30 a.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol. Mingyi Zhen, 18, died at the scene, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.
CHP Sgt. Mike Dulong said the investigation revealed that Zhen, who was driving a 2015 Toyota Prius, veered to the right for unknown reasons and the car hit a concrete sound wall.
Zhen got out of the disabled Prius and was walking around the vehicle when the driver of a big rig swerved to avoid him. But the rear of the rig’s trailer struck the Prius and Zhen, who was thrown into the number two lane, Dulong said.
The truck driver, 48-year-old Bradley Gunderman of Tulare, was uninjured. Anyone with more information on the crash was asked to call Officer J. Edmunds of the CHP Baldwin Park Area office at (626) 338-1164.
