A man and a woman were killed Wednesday and a 12-year-old boy was wounded after a Hawthorne police officer came upon a shooting in progress.
Hawthorne police Lt. Aimee Yoshida said no officers were injured in the gunfire, which erupted around 12:45 p.m. at Rosecrans and Kornblum avenues.
According to broadcast reports, a Hawthorne police officer was pulling up and witnessed a man shoot at a woman in a Mercedes-Benz, leading the officer to open fire on the suspect. The boy was also in the Mercedes.
The sheriff’s department was taking over the investigation.
The victims were not immediately identified.
