A motorist was killed Thursday when a vehicle crashed into a utility pole and caught fire in Hawthorne, police said.

The single-vehicle crash happened about 10 a.m. on Hawthorne Boulevard near Rosecrans Avenue, Hawthorne police Sgt. Scott Nichols said. The driver died at the scene.

The gender and age of the victim, who was alone in the vehicle, were not immediately known, Nichols said.

The utility pole remained upright and penetrated nearly into the rear seat of the vehicle, which wrapped around it.

Hawthorne Boulevard was expected to be closed between Rosecrans Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard well into the afternoon while an investigation was conducted.
