Authorities Thursday were investigating the fatal shooting by Los Angeles police of a man suspected in the shooting death of another man a few minutes earlier.
The officer-involved shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday near Third and Matthews streets. The 39-year-old suspect died at the scene, said coroner’s Chief Craig Harvey. His name was withheld pending notification of his relatives.
The fatally wounded man was a suspect in a shooting a few minutes earlier near Fourth and Soto streets, said LAPD Officer Nuria Vanegas. The victim of that shooting — a 29-year-old man — died at the scene, Harvey said. His name was withheld pending notification of his family.
Officers were patrolling in the area when they heard gunshots and saw a wounded man collapse, Vanegas said.
“The suspect was running in the area and they went after him,” she said.
A gun was recovered at the scene of the fatal officer-involved shooting, but it was not immediately known if the suspect fired at police. No officers were hurt.
The circumstances of the original shooting were unclear, and detectives were talking to numerous people in the neighborhood, said LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery.
“They go door-to-door, (at) businesses (and) residences, and interview anybody who was at home and may have seen anything,” Montgomery told CBS2. “In addition, they canvass the area and the buildings for any video cameras they see.”
Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the LAPD Force Investigation Division at (213) 486-5230, or (877) LAPD-247.
