Forty-four people were arrested Monday on suspicion of various offenses at the scene of an illegal gathering of street racers in an unincorporated area near South Los Angeles, authorities said.

The operation was conducted shortly after midnight near the intersection of Broadway and Imperial Highway, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The suspects were arrested on suspicion of various crimes, including drug-related offenses and for being wanted on warrants. Also, 209 citations were issued, including driving without a license and driving on a suspended license. And 54 vehicles were towed, the sheriff’s department reported.

Personnel involved in the operation included deputies from the sheriff’s Century, South Los Angeles, Compton and Lakewood stations, as well as officers from the California Highway Patrol.
