Dozens of marijuana plants were found early Saturday at a Los Feliz residence where about 100 small butane canisters were ignited when a fire broke out in an attached garage converted into a living space, authorities said.
The fire, reported at 6 p.m. Friday, in the 3900 block of West Sunset Drive, engulfed the garage and the flames then spread to a bedroom of the three- story main residence, which was attached to the garage by a breezeway, said Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Two vehicles were also burned.
Flammable butane gas can be used to extract concentrated oil from marijuana, but explosions and fires sometimes result.
Firefighters used a “wagon battery, ” which is a cannon-like turret on top of a fire engine that shoots large amounts of water, to help knock down the fire, Scott said.
More than 50 firefighters responded and knocked down the flames in 19 minutes, Scott said.
Los Angeles Police bomb squad and fire department arson investigators were investigating the cause of the fire, Scott continued.
