Authorities Thursday identified a 13-year-old skateboarder who was struck and killed by a car in the South Los Angeles area.
The accident occurred on Hooper Avenue near 77th Place around 9:50 p.m. Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol reported. Jarek Trejo of Los Angeles died at the scene, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.
The 18-year-old man driving the car, a red 2014 Ford Mustang, stopped at the scene and was given field sobriety tests by officers, “and DUI is not suspected,” a CHP statement said. His name was not released. He was not arrested.
According to the preliminary investigation, the Mustang was northbound on Hooper Avenue at about 45-50 mph, when the boy “rode his skateboard into the roadway, directly into the path of the oncoming vehicle,” the CHP reported.
The boy was accompanied by a parent at the time of his fatal injury, the CHP reported.
