A two-vehicle crash in Pomona left one driver dead and the other driver in custody Friday, police said.

The collision caused at least one of the vehicles to strike a power pole and electrical transformer in the 200 block of West Arrow Highway around 10:45 p.m. Thursday, said Pomona Police Lt. Chuck Becker.

Marissa Vasquez, 32, of Pomona died at the scene, said Pomona Police Sgt. Bert Sanchez. She was driving an SUV that was rear-ended by the other vehicle, police said.

Michael Gardner, 37, of Pomona, tried to run away after the collision, but he was arrested booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and grand theft auto, Sanchez said. Gardner was driving a 2014 Mercedes-Benz that had been stolen, Sanchez said.

“The suspect was determined to be under the influence of alcohol,” Sanchez said. Gardner was treated at a hospital for injuries he suffered in the crash.

The circumstances of the collision were under investigation. Arrow Highway was closed in both directions for a time, Becker said.
