A Baldwin Park man was sentenced Tuesday to a year in jail for his pet poodle’s beating death.
Superior Court Judge Juan Carlos Dominguez also ordered Jason Arnold Vaca, 35, to attend 26 anger management classes and a year of animal cruelty classes and to spend four years on formal probation.
Vaca is also barred from owning, possessing, living with or caring for any animal for 10 years, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Vaca pleaded no contest March 19 to a felony count of cruelty to an animal.
Authorities received a 911 call on March 18, 2014, that reported a man yelling and the sounds of a dog being hit, according to Deputy District Attorney Kelsey McKeever-Unger.
Police officers responding to the 911 call identified Vaca’s home as the source of the disruption, and saw blood in the home. They found the lifeless dog’s body as they entered the backyard.
He was arrested when officers determined that he was the dead dog’s owner.
