Two people were transported to a trauma center after a fiery solo vehicle crash on the northbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway in the city of Commerce, authorities said Saturday.
The crash happened at 11:30 p.m. Sunday on the northbound Santa Ana Freeway just south of the connector to the northbound Long Beach Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A small, black SUV was on the right shoulder on fire with one person inside, the CHP said.
Los Angeles County firefighters arrived and extricated one person from the burning SUV before transporting two people to a trauma center, said fire Dispatch Supervisor Michael Pittman.
A news videographer said officials at the scene explained a Ford Explorer had traveled up an embankment, hit a tree and rolled back down to the roadway, bursting into flames.
He said one CHP officer suffered cuts to his hand when he checked the burning SUV to see whether anyone else was in the vehicle.
