Crews continue to clean up a fuel spill at a freeway interchange near Sylmar from earlier Saturday in, an effort that has been extended lane closures for at least additional four hours.
The fuel spill at freeway interchange of the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway to the Golden State (5) Freeway was reported to the California Highway Patrol at 5:18 a.m., said CHP Officer Alex Rubio.
Rubio said a truck hit something on the freeway that punctured its fuel tank, releasing at least 60 gallons of fuel.
No injuries were reported, he said.
The number five lane of that freeway interchange was closed at 8:29 a.m. and the separate truck bypass ramp was also shut down, according to the CHP.
As the morning wore on, more and more lanes of the mainline freeway’s three lanes transition ramp were closed, and by 10:01 a.m. the entire ramp was cordoned off, with all traffic shunted onto the south 5.
And then, fuel was found on the other side of the 405 Freeway median. The northbound 405’s carpool lane was closed for emergency cleaning, from Rinaldi Street north to its end at the 5 interchange.
