Investigators probing a fire at a large Echo Park home that serves as the Fore Runners for Christ Church have determined that it was “an intentional act,” authorities said Wednesday.

The fire was reported about 2:30 a.m. Monday at the church in the 1600 block of North Morton Avenue, and prompted a notification to the House of Worship Task Force, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Humphrey said the fire was “an intentional act,” and an investigation is ongoing. He declined to elaborate.

Earlier, LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said, “The fire was started on the porch and extended to the attic, but was quickly extinguished.”

“Damage was limited primarily to the porch,” Stewart said. There were no injuries, she said.

The House of Worship Task Force is made up of area fire and police investigators and federal law enforcement agents.

Meanwhile, the NAACP on Tuesday warned black churches to take “necessary precautions” as authorities in Southern states investigate whether several church fires over the last week were arsons, the Los Angeles Times reported.
