Enterprise Rent-A-Car will pay $425,000 to settle age discrimination allegations stemming from hiring decisions at its Burbank location, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Tuesday.
According to the EEOC, the company allegedly passed over management- trainee job applicants aged 40 and older between 2008 and 2011 due to their age.
Enterprise denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that the applicants in question weren’t hired because their qualifications were inadequate. The company agreed to the settlement to avoid the time, effort and expense associated with further proceedings, according to the EEOC.
An EEOC investigation determined that 10 job applicants over 40 were ultimately denied hire in favor of less qualified, younger applicants, a violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, according to federal regulators.
The EEOC found that no applicants over 40 were hired into the management trainee position during the three-year period, and that the office failed to adequately maintain application records pursuant to federal law.
