The search for a boater who went missing after two vessels collided off Santa Catalina Island, killing one man and injuring three other people, is resuming Thursday morning, a sheriff’s deputy said.
It’s the fifth day since the accident and the sheriff department’s Special Enforcement Bureau will again send out its Marina del Rey boat team, underwater remotely operated vehicles, dive teams with the Port Police Department and deputies using sonar equipment, said a deputy at the sheriff’s Avalon station.
Family members identified the man who was killed as 26-year-old Michael Harris of San Francisco, a former student at the University of San Diego and son of Peter Harris, who was the 49ers’ president and CEO from 2000 to 2004.
Three other people were injured and another remained missing as a result of the crash, which happened about 1:20 a.m. Sunday about a quarter-mile northeast of Casino Point. The missing man has not been identified by authorities.
The U.S. Coast Guard received a report that a dinghy with five people aboard collided with another vessel, the U.S. Coast Guard’s SondraKay Kneen said.
One passenger aboard the dinghy was confirmed dead. Two suffered minor injuries and one person suffered a head injury. The injured, including Michael Harris’ girlfriend, were taken to UCLA Medical Center.
