A search was underway early Wednesday for a prison inmate who walked away from a fire camp in Sylmar.

Jesse Diaz, 24, of Riverside County was noticed missing from the Holton Conservation Camp in the 12600 block of North Little Tujunga Canyon Road around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Sgt. Nicole Patterson said. He was assigned to the camp after being convicted of evading police, she said.

Such camps are usually without bars and inmates are not considered dangerous or high-level offenders.

Corrections department personnel and Los Angeles County firefighters and deputies will be assisting in the search, Patterson said.

No description of Diaz was immediately released.
