A car-to-car shooting in Pomona believed to be gang-related left a 21-year-old man dead and prompted the lockdown of nearby schools, police said.
Firefighters were dispatched Thursday afternoon to the intersection of Park and Lexington avenues, said Inspector Randall Wright of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The victim was identified as Joe Morales of Pomona, according to Pomona police.
Morales died at a hospital, said Lt. Eddie Vazquez of the Pomona Police Department’s Investigative Services Division.
“The other party abandoned a stolen vehicle at the intersection of Garey Avenue and Rio Rancho (Road),” Vazquez said early tonight. “That suspect fled the scene and we are actively following leads as to his identity and location.”
Police were investigating reports that shots may have been exchanged by occupants of both vehicles, Vazquez said, adding that the shooting was believed to be gang-related.
Eastbound lanes of Rio Rancho Road between Garey Avenue and the Chino Valley (71) Freeway were closed as police gathered evidence.
The shooting occurred near Garey High School which was briefly placed on lockdown with other nearby campuses as a precaution, police said.
