A man was fatally struck by a big rig on the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway in Whittier early Friday after crashing his car, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The fatality occurred in the northbound lanes near Whittier Boulevard at 5:19 a.m., according to CHP Officer Tony Polizzi.

The victim’s car went over the side of the freeway. He made it out of the vehicle and climbed back up the embankment to the freeway, where he was struck by the big rig truck, according to the CHP.

The name of the man — believed to be 40 years old — was withheld pending notification of his family.

No other injuries were reported.

Three freeway lanes were shut down for a time, prompting the CHP to declare a SigAlert, but were all reopened by 10 a.m., according to Polizzi. The Whittier Boulevard offramp was closed until 10:50 a.m.
