At least eight people were killed in traffic crashes in Los Angeles County over the Thanksgiving holiday period, compared with five road deaths last year during the same period, the California Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.

Statewide, there were 37 traffic fatalities between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday, according to the CHP, down from 45 fatalities during the holiday period in 2014.

CHP officers arrested 242 suspected drunken drivers in Los Angeles County over the Thanksgiving weekend, 76 more than during the same period last year.

The arrests made on local freeways and in unincorporated areas contributed to the 1,028 arrests made by the CHP statewide. Over the holiday period last year, CHP officers made 982 drunken driving arrests throughout the state.
