Two of three suspects allegedly involved in the shooting death of another man during a drug deal gone bad were nabbed by police after crashing their getaway car near the scene of the fatal shooting, police said Thursday.
The incident began when Downey dispatchers received a call about 5:25 p.m. Wednesday that shots were being fired in the 12000 block of Downey Avenue, said Downey police spokesman Lt. Mark McDaniel.
Shortly after the call, police received a call about a traffic collision nearby. When the officers responded to the shooting scene, they discovered a man was shot in the parking lot. He was pronounced dead at the scene, McDaniel said.
Witnesses told police that a car had sped away from the homicide scene and then it was discovered that the car, a gray Toyota Yaris, matched the description of one of the cars involved in the nearby collision, McDaniel continued.
Witnesses at that location told police that three men had run from the Yaris. Officers managed to detain two of them nearby the accident scene, McDaniel said. One of those captured had suffered a gunshot wound and he was transported to a hospital for medical treatment before questioning.
The other man was transported to the Downey Police station for further questioning, McDaniel added. A search for the third suspect had not yielded results as dawn approached.
According to McDaniel the shooting appeared to be part of a drug deal and all four men — three suspects and the victim — knew each other.
The name of the dead man was withheld pending family notification.
Anyone with information on the homicide was asked to call the Downey police at (562) 904-2308 or Detective Paul Hernandez at (562) 904-2368. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS. All tips can be made anonymously.
