Graffiti was spray-painted on three corporate jets at Van Nuys Airport, causing thousands of dollars in damage, police said Monday.

The vandalism occurred between 7 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. in the northeast section of the airport where planes are typically parked, said Officer Rob Pedregon of the Los Angeles Airport Police Department.

The vandal or vandals cut through a perimeter fence to access the airport grounds, according to the officer.

Two of the planes sustained a total of $3,500 in damage, Pedregon said. The damage to the other plane was being assessed, he said.

Airport police, the FBI and the Los Angeles Police Department were investigating the vandalism, Pedregon said.

A Learjet parked at the same airport sustained an estimated $100,000 in damage when a man scrawled graffiti on it in July of 2013.

That suspect was arrested after posting images of the damage on social media, Pedregon said.
