A suicidal 28-year-old woman survived a jump from an overpass onto the Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway in Hawthorne Tuesday.
The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics, then transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where her condition was listed as stable, according to Hawthorne police Lt. Gary Tomatani.
Authorities received a 911 call about a person threatening to jump from the Prairie Avenue overpass of the westbound 105 about 10:45 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol Officer Michelle Bond.
She said responding CHP officers initiated a traffic break and began taking motorists off the freeway at Crenshaw Boulevard, then shut down all lanes and declared a SigAlert at 11:01 a.m.
County firefighters arrived at 10:50 and put a large rescue cushion on the 105 Freeway by the overpass.
“The woman jumped but did not hit the rescue cushion we put out,” county fire Dispatch Supervisor Chris Reade told City News Service.
The SigAlert was canceled and the roadway cleared by 12:23 p.m., according to Bond.
The woman, whose name was withheld, will be placed on a psychiatric hold at the hospital once she is medically cleared, Tomatani said. He declined to release the woman’s city of residence, saying authorities were attempting to contact her immediate family.
