A suspect was fatally wounded in a deputy-involved shooting in Santa Clarita, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported Friday.

The shooting took place about 7:50 p.m. in a residential area near Nathan Hill and Shangri-La drives, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Trina Schrader.

A deputy spotted a vehicle matching a description of a car driven by someone suspected of assault with a deadly weapon, according to the department. The deputy pulled the vehicle over.

The driver then jumped out of his car and began yelling profanities at the deputy, the department reported. The deputy ordered the driver to put his hands up in the air but he did not comply.

The driver then allegedly turned his body from the deputy and reached behind his back, appearing to grab a weapon, according to the deputy, who opened fire and hit the man.

Paramedics were called to the scene and transported the man to a hospital,where he later died, according to the department.

A male passenger was also in the car at the time of the shooting, the department said. He was detained for questioning.

A knife was recovered at the scene, according to the department. The investigation was continuing.

The fatal shooting was being investigated by sheriff’s homicide detectives, the sheriff’s Internal Affairs Bureau, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division and the L.A. County’s Office of the Inspector General.
