A 46-year-old man allegedly attacked his wife with a meat cleaver Tuesday in front of the couple’s 7-year-old son, and the husband later surrendered to authorities, a Garden Grove police lieutenant said.

Firefighters called police at 6:46 a.m. saying Thang Van Nguyen was outside the station wanting to turn himself in for “murdering” his wife, according to Garden Grove police Lt. Bob Bogue.

The victim — 44-year-old Huong Nguyen — was, however, not murdered as she was found conscious in the couple’s home when the suspect took police to the residence in the 12700 block of Flower Street, Bogue said.

The victim was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in critical condition to be treated for multiple stab wounds to the head, Bogue said. She was placed in a medically induced coma “due to the dramatic brain injury,” he said.

The 7-year-old was placed in the care of an uncle. A 19-year-old, another son, was also in the home at the time, but did not witness the attack that allegedly stemmed from marital problems between the Nguyens, Bogue said.

Thang Nguyen was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, Bogue said.
