A 54-year-old man was shot and wounded by police during a family disturbance call in Redondo Beach, authorities said Saturday

The officer-involved-shooting took place in the 2100 block of Manhattan Beach Boulevard near Aviation Park and the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, at about 11:40 p.m. Friday, Redondo Beach Police Lt. Joe Hoffman said.

Officers responded to a home regarding an alleged family dispute. During their contact at the home responding officers encountered Kermit Johnson in front of the house and the OIS occurred, Hoffman said.

Johnson sustained a gunshot wound to the hand and was transported to a hospital for treatment. A firearm was found at the scene, according to Hoffman. No other injuries were reported.

Johnson was subsequently arrested and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, carrying a concealed firearm and criminal threats, he said.

Johnson was being held in lieu of $150,000 bail is scheduled to appear in Torrance court on Monday, he said.

The department has not revealed any details about what led up to the OIS or about the officers involved in the shooting.

The shooting will be investigated by the Redondo Beach police and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division.
