A search was underway for someone who stabbed and critically wounded a 36-year-old woman in Monrovia as she headed home from a grocery store with her 2-year-old daughter, police said.

The attack occurred about 11 p.m. Wednesday as the woman returned to her apartment complex in the 200 block of South Madison Avenue, carrying her daughter and some groceries, according to Monrovia Police. She was hospitalized in critical condition, with injuries to her face, neck, arms and back, police said. The child was not hurt.

No description was available of the assailant, who attacked the woman from behind, police said. The motive was not immediately determined.
