A private plane crash-landed Monday on a street south of Whiteman Airpark in Pacoima, but the pilot escaped injury.

No one on the ground was hurt in the crash, which was reported about 1:40 p.m. on San Fernando Road south of Osborne Street, said Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The plane, which did not catch fire, damaged the tops of several parked vehicles and ended up in the middle of the street, with one of its wings torn off from the impact.

Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration said the pilot of the Mooney M20 tried to return to Whiteman for unknown reasons shortly after departing.

“The pilot ended up landing on San Fernando Road south of the airport,” Gregor said. “The pilot, who was the only person on board, was not injured. The FAA will investigate.”
