A truck hauling a load of sand overturned on the San Diego (405) Freeway in North Hills Sunday, prompting a SigAlert as people tried to drive the wrong way to get out of the resulting traffic jam.

The crash was reported about 10:50 a.m. on the southbound 405 approaching Nordhoff Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Some drivers tried to cut across landscaping to get to ramps off the freeway, and some cars got mired in mud, CHP officers said.

Crews eventually cleared the mess and the freeway lanes reopened at about 2 p.m., the CHP reported.
