Sheriff’s detectives were searching Thursday for whomever shot and killed a 48-year-old man in the laundry room of an apartment complex in the unincorporated Athens area near South Los Angeles.
The victim was identified Thursday morning by the coroner’s office as Alexander Ameme of Los Angeles.
The sheriff’s South Los Angeles Station received a report of “shots fired” in the 1700 block of West 125th Street about 2 a.m. Wednesday, according to Deputy Kimberly Alexander.
“A short time later, a witness walked into the laundry room … and discovered the victim lying on the ground suffering from numerous gunshot wounds throughout his body,” Alexander said. Ameme was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
No suspect information was available and it’s unknown if the shooting was gang-related, Alexander said. A motive for the killing was unknown.
