What is it with bears running through Southland residential neighborhoods?

In the latest case, a 2-year-old male brown bear went rambling through a Sylmar neighborhood until wildlife officers tranquilized it.

The bear was spotted roaming in the 13300 block of Eldridge Avenue, near the campus of Mission College, about 9:15 p.m., Monday, according to Andrew Hughan of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The animal ran through yards and climbed fences until wildlife officers were able to shoot it with a tranquilizer dart, Hughan said.

The bear was secured and was being taken back to the Angeles National Forest late tonight, Hughan added.

Almost the same scene played out over the weekend in Duarte when a baby bear was spotted running around homes in that city. Officials were able to shoot that bear with a tranquilizer dart and then transport it back to the wild.
