A 27-year-old felon was charged Thursday with a series of felonies for allegedly raping a woman in a public restroom at a Lincoln Heights park.

Edgar Alexander Lobos is accused of attacking the woman around noon Monday, roughly 12 hours after he had been released from jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned May 26 in downtown Los Angeles.

Lobos was charged with one felony count each of forcible rape, sodomy by use of force, sexual penetration by foreign object and possession of a firearm by a felon. According to prosecutors, Lobos has prior convictions for spousal abuse and felon in possession of a weapon.

According to police, the 31-year-old victim was walking through Lincoln Park when the suspect pulled a small-caliber handgun and forced the woman into a nearby restroom. She and witnesses were able to provide police with a description of the suspect, and Lobos was arrested Tuesday morning.

Capt. William Hayes, commanding officer of the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division, said Lobos has “a rather lengthy criminal history” of vandalism, possession of controlled substances and domestic violence, and is a known gang member with distinctive facial tattoos that aided in his identification.

At the time of his arrest, he was allegedly in possession of a handgun investigators believe was the one used during the crime, Hayes said.

Lobos had been released from jail about 12 hours before the attack, according to Hayes. He had been incarcerated for a parole violation, he said.

According to prosecutors, he faces up to life in prison if convicted.
