A 36-year-old woman was in custody Monday after she dyed her hair pink, tattooed a dragon to her face and wore blue contact lenses to evade police after driving over and killing a pedestrian.
But police found Tracy Capp Saturday night, chased her in a stolen car, fought with her as she resisted arrest and brought in a police dog to subdue and arrest her, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
Clapp was locked up in a hospital recovering from her injuries, which included a dog bite. She was expected to be booked Monday morning — if the doctors allow — on charges including the hit-and-run fatality and evading police, Bertagna said.
Despite the makeover, police believe she was driving the black BMW sedan with paper license plates that struck Santa Ana resident Christopher Chavez as he was walking in a crosswalk at Bristol Street and Central Avenue, with the right of way, about 2:15 a.m., on April 20.
The motorist in the BMW allegedly stopped at the scene, walked up to Chavez and then drove off.
He was rushed to Orange County Global Medical Center with serious injuries and later declared brain dead.
Clapp had an extensive criminal history and it was “apparent” she knew police were looking for her, Bertagna said.
She was traced to an area of southeast Santa Ana on Saturday, where they saw her leave a home and get into a stolen car.
At the end of a 10-to-15-minute vehicle pursuit, she tried to run but was arrested with the help of a polcie dog.
