A search was under way for a 22-year-old man who went missing after a rogue wave swept him off a 15-foot skiff off Catalina Island Thursday morning.
Two boaters, neither wearing a life jacket, were knocked off the watercraft into the water near China Point. One of them managed to get back onto the skiff and contacted authorities about 11:25 a.m., according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
“He also stated that he was experiencing a medical emergency and the other boater who entered the water had not yet surfaced,” according to a Coast Guard statement.
A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew was deployed and crews from the Los Angeles County fire and sheriff’s departments were assisting in the search for the missing man, who was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt and black pants.
Coast Guard personnel treated the rescued boater for his unspecified medical emergency.
Anyone with information regarding the missing boater was urged to call Coast Guard watchstanders at (310) 521-3805.
