A kidnapping suspect was in critical condition Sunday after barricading himself inside a Palmdale home with six to seven hostages, releasing all but one and then shooting himself.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s SWAT team was called at 12:25 p.m. Saturday to a home in the 3100 block of Avenue S-2, near 30th Street East, Deputy Sara Rodriguez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said.

“After (deputies communicated) with the suspect for several minutes, the suspect released some of the hostages, however he continued to hold one person hostage,” Rodriguez said. “Moments later, a gunshot was heard coming from inside the residence.”

Fearing for the safety of the remaining hostage, the SWAT team entered the residence at about 1:45 p.m. and found the suspect suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot, she said.

None of the hostages were harmed by the suspect.

The suspect was taken to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition, Rodriguez said.
