Authorities have identified a man who was fatally shot in South Gate after a business dispute over vehicle parts turned violent.
Marco Franco of Maywood, 25, and one other man were shot at 5:50 p.m. Thursday in the 4900 block of Mason Street, west of the Long Beach (710) Freeway, according to the coroner’s office and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
South Gate Police officers responded to the location regarding reports of a fight involving a “man armed with a knife,” authorities said.
Franco and the other man — both considered suspects — entered the business and argued with the victim over missing vehicle parts, authorities said.
When the arguing escalated to punches, detectives said the suspects pulled out knives on the victim.
The victim’s nephew saw the brawl, grabbed a handgun and fired shots at both suspects, hitting each suspect with one shot to the upper torso, deputies said.
Franco was pronounced dead at the scene. The other suspect was taken to a hospital in unknown condition, according to deputies, who noted that the victim’s nephew also suffered minor injuries.
Authorities collected a handgun and two knives from the scene, deputies said.
Anyone with information on the shooting was urged to contact the LASD at (323) 890-5500 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
