A man crashed a Mercedes-Benz at the end of a police chase and then refused to get out of the vehicle for more than two hours before surrendering to a SWAT team, police said.

The driver was initially pursued for reckless driving about 4:30 p.m. Friday, but managed to elude officers, said Long Beach Police Department Sgt. James Richardson.

The vehicle was again spotted about 5 p.m. “and the driver fled again,” Richardson said.

After a short pursuit, the Mercedes-Benz became disabled at the intersection of Artesia Boulevard and Downey Avenue when it struck another vehicle that careened into several parked cars, according to Richardson.

The driver, his vehicle surrounded by an LBPD SWAT team, refused to surrender until about 7:45 p.m., Richardson said.

He was arrested after being treated at the scene for some minor injuries described as cuts, but it was not immediately clear if they were self- inflicted or sustained during the crash, Richardson said.
