Santa Ana police hope video footage being circulated Thursday will lead them to the purse snatcher who robbed a 73-year-old woman in a drug store parking lot.

The robbery happened about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the CVS parking lot at 3911 S. Bristol St., according to Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

The woman, who depends on a walker to get around, had gotten out of her car when she was approached by the suspect, who used the ruse of offering to help patch up paint scratches on her car, Bertagna said.

“He comes up to her and says, ‘You have scratches on the car. I’m going to fix this up for you for free,’ ” Bertagna said.

The woman assured him her husband would take care of it and tried to get away, but the suspect tried to block her with his car and then at some point even got into her car and attempted unsuccessfully to start it, Bertagna said.

Finally, the robber grabbed her purse, which was hooked onto her walker, and fled, dragging the victim to the ground, Bertagna said.

The woman did not sustain any significant injuries and did not require hospitalization, Bertagna said.

The suspect is white, in his mid-20s, 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing about 145 pounds, Bertagna said. He has wavy, brown hair and was wearing blue jeans frayed in the knees and blue shorts under the pants, Bertagna said.

The suspect approached multiple vehicle in the lot before the robbery, so investigators believe there are more witnesses who can help them, Bertagna said. Surveillance video shows the suspect circling the parking lot, the corporal added.

Anyone with information was asked to call detectives at (714) 245-8545 or (714) 245-8408. Anonymous tips may be made through Orange County Crime Stoppers at (877) TIP-OCCS.
