An LAPD SWAT team Thursday fired tear gas into a South Los Angeles residence and arrested four assault suspects who were barricaded for several hours, police said.

The incident began about 1 a.m., when officers received a radio call about an armed assault involving five men and an adult male victim in South Los Angeles, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Liliana Preciado. A shooting occurred but the victim was not hit, Preciado said. The exact location of the shooting was not immediately reported.

The suspects ran to the 1200 block of 42nd Street, where one was taken into custody, but the others barricaded themselves inside a home near 42nd Street and Van Buren Place, Preciado said. At least one handgun was believed to be in the home with them, she added.

A SWAT team, including crisis negotiators, was summoned to the scene, Preciado said.

Shortly before 8 a.m., the SWAT team took the four suspects into custody, said LAPD Officer Aareon Jefferson. The names of the suspects were not immediately released.

Police said several tear gas canisters were fired into the home, and some of the suspects were nabbed while trying to flee.

People who had been evacuated from nearby homes were being allowed to return.
