Authorities Sunday were trying to figure out why a 1995 Honda Civic was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of Santa Fe Springs road when a head-on crash killed a 22-year-old woman passenger in the Honda.

The Honda driver, a 24-year-old man, sustained critical injuries. Neither of them was wearing a seat belt.

While the crash took place Saturday at 2:35 a.m., law enforcement officers did not speculate if drinking and driving may have played a role.

The other motorist, a 20-year-old man in a 2015 Dodge Charger, and his passenger, a 20-year-old woman, escaped with minor injuries, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Stephan Brandt.

The crash at Mines Boulevard and Duchess Drive, Brandt said.

The Honda was going westbound on Mines Boulevard in the eastbound lanes when the car struck a Dodge Charger head-on. The Charger was going eastbound at Mines Boulevard and Duchess Drive.

Paramedics rushed the driver of the Honda to Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center and his passenger, the 22-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene, Brandt said.

“Neither the driver nor the passenger of the Honda were wearing a seatbelt during the collision,” Brandt said.

It was not immediately known if the occupants of the Dodge Charger were transported to an area hospital.

Officers at the CHP’s Santa Fe Springs office asked anyone who saw the crash to call them at (562) 868-0503.
