Authorities Monday were trying to track down a hit-and-run driver who was behind the wheel of a older-model Saab that struck and fatally injured a homeless man in a wheelchair, Pomona police said today.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, which was reported at 11:12 p.m. Sunday at 944 West Holt Ave., according to Pomona police.
They described the hit-and-run vehicle as a gray 2004 four-door Saab with a license number of 7SQJ485 and said the driver was speeding.
The victim was identified by police as Charles Atterbury, 49, who was apparently trying to cross the street when he was struck. Police said he began using a wheelchair after losing a leg when he was hit by a vehicle on the same street about two years ago.
The Saab’s front license plate was knocked off in the collision, and detectives tracked down the registered owner, who said the car’s ownership had recently been transferred and she had not been behind the wheel, according to police.
Detectives believe the car — it’s unclear whether it is a two-door or four-door model — may be in Ontario.
Investigators were going door-to-door in the vicinity of the fatality, checking businesses and apartment complexes for possible surveillance footage.
The Major Accident Investigation Team, which is probing the fatality, closed Holt Avenue between Hamilton Boulevard and Fillmore Place until about 5:30 this morning.
Anyone with information on the case was urged to call police at (909) 620-2085, or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
