A 10-year-old boy sustained fatal injuries when he was struck by a vehicle while riding on his scooter in the unincorporated South Whittier area, the California Highway Patrol reported Saturday.
The crash occurred at 4:45 p.m. Friday in the area of Sunshine and Painter avenues, according to a CHP report.
Police said 18-year-old Adrian Alvarez was driving a 1966 Ford Mustang east on Sunshine Avenue at approximately 15 miles per hour when the child was riding his scooter from the south sidewalk.
The child, who was identified by family members in broadcast reports as Eduardo Jara, came from behind a parked vehicle and crossed directly in front of the path of the Ford, police said, and the driver was unable to bring his vehicle to a complete stop before hitting the child.
The boy was airlifted to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, police said. Alvarez remained on scene and cooperated with investigators.
Police said speed was not a factor and the boy was not wearing a helmet when he was hit.
