A tension-filled 24-hour armed standoff in a Pico Rivera home that forced evacuations of nearby residences finally came to a peaceful conclusion Monday when the suspect was arrested.

Few details of the dramatic end to the standoff were available, although authorities had used tear gas to force the armed suspect from the home. It was not known if that prompted the suspect to leave the home.

The standoff began at 2:12 p.m. Sunday when authorities responded to a call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon at a home in the 8800 block of Dalewood Avenue, said sheriff’s Deputy Stephanie Navarro. The home in in a subdivision three blocks north of Telegraph Road and one block west of the San Gabriel River flood control channel.

The standoff continued until about 1:20 p.m. Monday, when the man was taken into custody, according to the sheriff’s department. The circumstances of the arrest were not immediately known, and the man’s name was not immediately released.

The man was initially believed to be holding his mother at gunpoint, but later reports indicated that she may not have been held against her will. About 8 a.m. Monday, the man’s mother came out of the residence. She was treated for the effects of tear gas that had been introduced into the home, but appeared to be otherwise unharmed, a deputy said.

Deputies evacuated surrounding homes for safety during the standoff, according to the sheriff’s department.
