An unpopular neighbor suspected of aggravating residents in El Segundo for weeks by blasting a train-sounding air horn in the late night or early morning hours has been arrested on suspicion of disturbing the peace, police said Monday.

El Segundo police Lt. Ray Garcia told a TV station the horn blasts may have been retaliation against someone in the area in a possible nasty neighbor dispute. But no motive was confirmed.

Police allege that John Nuggent had sounded the horn in the wee hours almost nightly for weeks before he was arrested about 4 a.m. Sunday.

Officers heard the horn’s blare on the west side of the city and arrested Nuggent after pulling over the 2006 Chevrolet Aveo he was driving in the area of Grand Avenue and Main Street, according to El Segundo Police.

They found air horn equipment inside the car, police said.

“Several El Segundo residents, who were alleged victims of the air horn noise, responded to the scene and initiated a citizen’s arrest on Nuggent,” according to a police statement. “He was subsequently transported to El Segundo jail for booking and his vehicle was impounded.”

There had been numerous reports of a man in a car similar to the Aveo sounding a train-type air horn over the past several weeks, police said.
