Two brothers suspected of stealing a Riverside man’s car while he was away on vacation were behind bars Friday.
Alfredo Romero Sanchez, 20, and Hugo Romero Sanchez, 24, were booked Thursday into the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of auto theft and receiving stolen property.
Alfredo Sanchez was additionally booked for alleged probation violations, and his older brother for allegedly being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and narcotics.
The elder Sanchez had several active warrants, too, and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. Alfredo Sanchez is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
According to Riverside police Lt. Kevin Townsend, Alfredo Sanchez had been stopped earlier this month for a traffic violation, and patrol officers immediately identified the vehicle as belonging to a La Sierra resident.
However, the suspect claimed that he had borrowed the car, and because the owner was on holiday and unreachable, officers could not confirm whether Sanchez was telling the truth and thus let him go, Townsend said.
After the man returned from vacation, investigators learned the car had been stolen and went to the brothers’ residence in the 5400 block of Jones Avenue, where both men were taken into custody without incident, he said.
According to the lieutenant, investigators found a stolen 9mm Glock semiautomatic handgun and drug paraphernalia in the home.
Court records show that Alfredo Sanchez has two grand theft convictions, and his brother has an auto theft conviction, along with several convictions for possession of controlled substances.
