Covina Police Wednesday sought public help to find a suspect who assaulted a U.S. Postal Service employee and tried to burglarize a residence.
Officers were sent to the 300 block of East Cypress Street about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday on a report of a possible burglary and a person down at the location.
“The first officer on scene found a USPS mail carrier on the ground bleeding from a head wound (in) front of a residence,” according to a police statement. “The USPS employee was lying at the curb line next to his USPS truck, and was conscious. … He told officers he was struck before he knew he was under attack and he had no idea what he was struck with or by whom.”
The postal worker, whose name was withheld, was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Witnesses told police they saw an SUV being driven erratically away from the scene. The light-colored vehicle, which had dark tinted windows, may have been a BMW X5. No suspect description was available.
“The resident arrived home while officers were on scene and confirmed entry had been forced into his home prior to the assault on the USPS employee,” police said. “However, no property was taken.”
Anyone with information about the crime was urged to call Detective Tim Statler at (626) 384-5622.
