A pre-dawn pileup Sunday injured nine people in the Lakeview neighborhood.

The four-car crash was reported shortly after 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Gilman Springs and Eden Hot Springs roads.

Fire crews reported that one vehicle went over an embankment. Two people trapped in the wreckage had to be extricated, according to April Newman with the Riverside County Fire Department.

Nine people were hospitalized: four with serious injuries, one with moderate injuries and four with minor injuries.

The California Highway Patrol was investigating the crash as a possible drunken driving case.
