A wrong-way driver on the Riverside Freeway (91) caused a seven-car collision Sunday that injured several people.

The crash was at around 2:20 a.m. on the eastbound side of the 91, near the 71 Freeway, according to California Highway Patrol.

The wrong-way driver collided head-on with another car, starting a chain reaction of crashes, according to the CHP.

There was heavy construction in the area at the time as crews were putting the finishing touches on new express lanes due to open Monday morning.

Construction workers near the scene helped extricate some of the victims before first-responders arrived, according to the CHP.

It was not immediately clear how many people were injured, but several people were hospitalized with minor to moderate injuries.
