A wrong-way driver was in custody Monday after terrifying dozens of other motorists on the Long Beach (710) and Santa Ana (5) freeways before crashing into at least three cars in Commerce, authorities said.

Despite the potential for disaster, no one involved in the crashes sustained significant injuries and no one was hospitalized, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Miguel Ornelas.

The wrong-way vehicle was spotted around 1:45 a.m. Monday driving southbound in northbound lanes on the Long Beach Freeway at Third Street in East Los Angeles, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Alex Rubio.

The man continued southbound, getting in the northbound lanes of the Santa Ana Freeway at Atlantic Boulevard in Commerce, where he crashed into cars and was arrested, Rubio said.

All northbound lanes of the Santa Ana Freeway were closed at Atlantic Boulevard, except the far right lane, according to the CHP SigAlert.
