Authorities Monday were trying to determine what legal action may be taken against two suspected drunken drivers believed to have caused separate, but related, horrific early morning traffic crashes on the San Diego (405) Freeway near LAX that killed one victim.

The 24-year-old motorist was killed on the northbound 405 Freeway, north of Century Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The 24-year-old man was driving a 2017 Mazda, which was disabled in traffic lanes. His car was rear-ended by a 2017 Ford Fusion driven by a 32- year man from Los Angeles, suspected of driving under the alcohol or drugs.

The victim, a resident of Carson, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 32-year-old man, who suffered minor injuries, was arrested.

A little over a half an hour later, on the southbound 405 in the same area, a 34-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of triggering a three- vehicle crash where one person suffered major injuries. The 34-year-old man escaped with minor injuries.

The motorist, who was driving a 2003 Toyota Camry allegedly under the influence of alcohol or drugs, rear ended a 1996 Nissan Sentra that had slowed due to the previous crash. Paramedics rushed a female passenger to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center suffering from a brain injury and a fractured hip, according to the CHP.

The two crashes came in the early morning darkness Saturday about an hour after closing time for the sale of alcohol.
